Every weekday Star 102.5 plays “Smarter Than Colleen” at 8:10am. They get a listener on the phone who thinks they know Hollywood Trash and ask them five questions. Colleen is removed from the room and has no idea what the questions are. When Colleen comes back she gets to answer the questions, if the listener gets more right (tie goes to Colleen since it’s “Smarter than Colleen” not “As Smart as Colleen”) then they win a great prize!
Combat Hunger
Combat Hunger is the Midwest’s largest two-day food drive, held each year on the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. STAR broadcasts live from 5a – 6p on Thursday and Friday at 12th and Locust, downtown Des Moines, collecting cash and non-perishable food items for The Food Bank of Iowa. Partners with Combat Hunger include the Iowa Motor Truck Association – who provide all the truck transportation for food pick ups from participating businesses and schools; The Des Moines Register – who provide a minimum of 4 ads in the Des Moines Register, include a bag drop on the Thursday prior to Combat Hunger as well as host a large in-house food drive with their employees; Mercy Medical Center – who provide a significant number of volunteers as well as host an in-house food drive with their employees; and Dahl’s – who allow collection bins and coupons in their stores for two weeks prior to CH. All sponsors provide in-kind donations and any other involvement on a client level will need to be discussed to make sure it makes sense to include them in the promotion.
Des Moines Arts Festival
Arts Festival is a two-day expo featuring some of the best artists in the entire country. All stations are media partners with the Downtown Events Group, who puts on the Arts Festival. Each year we do something different and have done a group activity, such as Fish Printing or Sand Art, or we’ve done our own thing and broadcasted from a specific area at the Arts Festival. Involvement with a client in the Arts Festival is on a TBD basis b/c we have to go through an approval process with the DEG.
Pumpkin Run
This is a 5k cross-country run through TimberPine Nursery in Earlham. It happens in September. There are a few opportunities for clients including booths at the event!
